ABOUT

We are a coalition of seven worker centers representing immigrant working people and working people of color in the Bay Area. We surveyed over 1400 people working to make ends meet - earning less than $25 per hour - to find out how they have been impacted by the pandemic, and what they want in a good job. Survey respondents worked in restaurants, in-home patient care, house cleaning, janitorial work, construction, retail and more.

Three quarters of those surveyed lost work, two-thirds could not access Unemployment Insurance, more than half could not access Paid Sick Leave, and more than a quarter said they would not report a violation by their employer.

These results define the Bay Area Essential Workers Agenda’s four-point platform for a true economic recovery.

  • Enact thriving wages and benefits, with paid sick leave and paid time off.

Ensure working people know their rights and they are enforced. Increase resources for outreach and education to working people, as well as investigation and upholding of workers' rights.

  • Voice and respect on the job, right to organize without retaliation.

Support working people facing retaliation statewide.

  • ensure everyone has Healthcare, unemployment, and family care.

Ensure everyone has basic living standards by passing the Excluded Workers Pilot Program (AB 2847).

  • ensure everyone has Pathways to good jobs, with paid training and advancement.

Establish paid job trainings to ensure all working people in the bay area have the opportunity to work good jobs that serve the public.
